Compensation is one of those Oracle Fusion HCM modules that looks simple from the outside — salary, bonus, done — until you’re actually in it, juggling budget pools, worksheets, guideline matrices, and approval chains all at once. I’ve built and reviewed enough compensation cycles now to know that most of the confusion isn’t about any one piece being hard, it’s about not having the whole picture in front of you at once. So I put together a one-page cheat sheet, and I’m sharing it here.

If you’re new to Oracle Cloud HCM and Compensation is your entry point, start here. The module has its own vocabulary — plans, categories, salary basis, grade rates, budget pools, worksheets — and they all connect in a specific order. This lays out the end-to-end flow from Compensation Plan through Total Rewards Statement, so you can see how the pieces click together before you’re staring at a worksheet configuration screen wondering where to begin.
If you already know other modules well but Compensation isn’t your area, this gets you oriented fast. Maybe you’ve spent years in Core HR or Payroll and Compensation has always been the module someone else owned. This gives you the setup sequence, the terminology, and how Compensation hands off to Payroll, Performance, Benefits, and the General Ledger, so you’re not starting from zero when it lands on your plate.
If you’re prepping for an interview, this is built to be reviewed the night before. Compensation interview questions tend to circle the same core areas — salary basis setup, grade rates, eligibility profiles, budget pools, worksheets, approval workflows — and I pulled those together with the plan types, common processes, and troubleshooting scenarios people actually get asked about, so you can walk in with the full module fresh in your head.
If you just want a quick refresher to keep your own skills sharp, this works as a standing reference. Compensation cycles don’t run every week, so it’s easy to lose the details between cycles. This is meant to be scannable in under a minute — the kind of thing you keep open in a tab when you need to remind yourself how budget pools roll up or what a worksheet actually configures.
If you’re the one interviewing candidates, this flips into a question bank. Building good Compensation questions is harder than it sounds when you’re trying to separate people who’ve configured a real cycle from people who’ve memorized a glossary. This gives you the plan components, the merit increase matrix logic, and the common troubleshooting scenarios (worksheet not showing, budget not calculating, TRS not generating) to build questions around actual on-the-job judgment.
And if you’re writing test cases or doing a gap analysis, this doubles as a checklist. Walking through the end-to-end flow, the key configurations, and the integration points (Payroll, Performance, Benefits, General Ledger) side by side is a fast way to catch what your test coverage is missing before a cycle goes live — and budget and TRS generation are exactly the kind of thing you don’t want to discover a gap in after the fact.
What’s actually on the page
The eleven-step end-to-end flow from Compensation Plan through Total Rewards Statement, key configurations with real examples, nine advanced topics (Salary Management, Individual Compensation, Compensation Workbench, Grade Step Progression, Budgeting & Pools, Total Rewards Statement, Compensation History, Approval Workflows, Compensation Analytics), a sample merit increase matrix showing how performance rating and compa-ratio combine to suggest an increase, common compensation event examples, plan types, integration points, reports and REST APIs, a troubleshooting and diagnostics section organized by symptom, global compensation patterns, interview topics, and tips for running a cleaner cycle.

Download it, print it, keep it open during your next cycle — whatever’s useful. Skim it before an interview, hand it to someone picking up Compensation for the first time, or use it to double-check your test plan before go-live.
If this is useful, I’d love to hear which module you’d want to see next.
